A monthly meeting to discuss books: nonfiction and fiction, old and new. There is usually a monthly book recommendation, but sometimes we choose to just share whatever the individual participants have been reading.
This month's reading: "Driving the Green Book: A road trip through the living history of Black resistance," by Alvin Hall (2023). During the era of Jim Crow, Black travelers encountered hostility in both the South and the North. From 1936 to 1967, millions relied on the "Negro Motorist Green Book," the guide to businesses where they could safely rest, eat or sleep. The author revisits the world of the Green Book by taking a road trip to some of the motels, restaurants, stores, and theaters where Black Americans found a friendly welcome.
Hosted by Elise and Cal at their home. You will receive their address upon RSVPing.
